TMJ disorder is a condition that affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This joint connects the lower jaw to the temporal bone of the skull, which is located in front of the ear. The TMJ includes all the muscles surrounding the jaw, nerves and blood vessels.

Pain in the face or jaw area can be very troublesome, and often cause you to feel stressed and uncomfortable. If left untreated, the condition can worsen over time and affect the quality of your daily life. Speak to our TMJ treatment in Melbourne specialists today to find a treatment option that’s right for you.

DIAGNOSIS OF TMJ DISORDER

To gauge the intensity of your pain, our dentists may administer a “clench” test. If you experience pain in any of your teeth or jaw when you bite down, we will diagnose it as TMJ disorder. To confirm this diagnosis and to evaluate the position of the TMJ, we will create mold impressions of your bite and mount these on an articulator. Through this, we can determine if there is a structural disorder inside the joint, or if other factors like uneven teeth are affecting the joint.

TREATMENTS INCLUDE

1. Orthodontics
There are very few cases of TMJ disorder that are severe enough to have required surgery. Most of the time, the disorder can be corrected with a restorative treatment such as orthodontics. This method can help correct your bite and relieve the pain and pressure on the TMJ.

If there is no structural disorder in the joint, but there are interferences that affect the bite, we may suggest correcting the problem using an appliance.

3. Mouth guards
A mouth guard is another option we may recommend, to protect your lower and upper teeth. Effectively, this can prevent any damage that may occur from aggressive teeth grinding during the night.
